KOTA KINABALU: A 27-year-old baker Soen Tan Sieu Ni from Kota Kinabalu was crowned as Champion of the Miss Pearl International Beauty Pageant 2023 during the grand finale of the beauty pageant at Hakka Hall here last night.
The first runner-up was Diamond Pang Nai Ee, 21, a front desk clerk cum social media strategist in Kota Kinabalu, and self-employed Jelsi Jass Ellyvera James, 22, as the second runner-up.
The event was officiated by Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam who said events such as beauty pageants should be supported because they have a multitude of benefits that go beyond mere aesthetics.
He said beauty pageants have the potential to enhance tourism and thus spur the economy.
Beauty pageants also give opportunities to the beauty contestants to showcase their talents as well as giving them confidence to persue their interest and leadership in what ever field they pursue, he said.
“Beauty pageants have the power to uplift and empower individuals, showcasing their talents and contributing to their personal growth.
“Besides that, it is also an opportunity for business corporations to showcase their business connections especially in terms of fashion, beauty products and others.
“Therefore, I believe it is crucial to continue supporting and promoting beauty pageants in Malaysia, in creating a brighter and more beautiful future for our nation,” said Dr Joachim, who is also the Local Government and Housing Minister.
