KOTA BELUD: Educators, particularly teachers have been urged to master communication and information technology (ICT), especially skills related to e-learning to make it easier for them to impart knowledge to students.

In making the call, former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said this is because the learning and teaching system in the classroom is changing towards applying all e-learning facilities.

“With just a Handphone or Smart Phone, Teaching and Learning can be done.

“It is no longer conventional. This is the challenge that educators have to face. Teaching and educating children by applying digital education technology,” he said.

Salleh, who is Usukan state assemblyman, said this in his speech at the Outstanding Service Award Ceremony for the Kota Belud District Education Office, here today.

Also present was Sabah Education Department Director Tah Nia Binti Jaman.

Salleh also called on educators to equip themselves with the skills to use Google Classroom for learning and teaching purposes.

“Educators also need to be able to use the Google Meet, Zoom, Webex, Facebook, Whatsapp, Telegram, Youtube, Live Streaming and many more applications. The latest is the use of learning through the Tik Tok application.

“This is the challenge that educators have to face. I am confident that teachers and educators are capable of handling this challenge. The experience of implementing PDPR during the two-year Covid-19 Pandemic era has given us all a lot of experience and lessons,” he said.

According to Salleh, E-learning, also known as virtual learning, has started since 1999 but the implementation of it in Malaysia has been slow due to several factors including the problem of stuck lines and areas with no internet access.

“For that reason, when I was the Minister of Communications and Multimedia, one of my priorities was to ensure that the entire Kota Belud district enjoyed a 4Gp service network because at that time 3G internet access could only be accessed in the area around Kota Belud town,” he said.

As a leader in the district, Salleh said he will always ensure that education in the Kota Belud district will always move forward.

“I will also support all efforts and programs aimed at ensuring improvement of education in the Kota Belud district,” he said.

Salleh also emphasised the importance of good relations and cooperation between educators and parents as well as the community in order to achieve the mission and vision of educational excellence in the district.
