KOTA KINABALU: The statement made by Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, Malaysian Special Envoy to China, is consistent with Malaysia’s “One China policy”, which is also the policy of ASEAN and is in total accordance with international law and the United Nations charter, said Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee.
Yong, Sabah Nominated Assemblyman, said in response to some comments in news reports that Tiong’s statement does not represent Malaysia.
“That Malaysia is walking a tight rope in order not to offend the USA is understandable,” said Yong.
“But Dato Sri Tiong’s statement on Malaysia’s One China Policy is accurate. Indeed, Malaysia’s One China Policy has been very clear, unequivocal, consistent and firm ever since 1974 when Malaysia took the lead among ASEAN countries to recognise Beijing as the seat of government of One China, of which Taiwan is an inalienable part.
“This One China policy is what every official, including politicians like myself, have been briefed to uphold at all times, especially when meeting with people from Taiwan so as not to send wrong signals to anyone.”
This being the case, Malaysia should not send wrong signals to the whole world that Malaysia is wavering on our One China Policy,” said Yong.
Yong emphasised that it was Nancy Pelosi’s “uninvited trip” to Malaysia, followed by her special flight bound for Taiwan from Malaysia, which has put Malaysia (and other countries, too) in a tough spot.
“The Global Village era has come to an end, as the world witnesses how the US has been imposing its will on the global village.
Yong Teck Lee, who is also a former Chief Minister of Sabah, said the new global alignment is Russia/China on one side, while USA/NATO on the other side.0
