Federal pledge to upgrade the Tamparuli–Kiulu–Rondogung Ranau road into a highway – Madius

KUALA LUMPUR: The Tamparuli–Kiulu– Rondogung Ranau route will be upgraded to a highway through an alternative alignment of the Pan Borneo Highway Sabah Phase Two project.

Tuaran MP, Datuk Seri Madius Tangau said this was confirmed by the Deputy Minister of Works, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, while responding to his question during the Oral Question Session in the Parliament today.

Madius explained that the upgrade will involve three main sections: the Kiulu–Pahu road, which will be expanded to four lanes with an R4 design over a length of 24.8 kilometers.

“Additionally, the Pahu–Rondogung road will be upgraded to two lanes with an R4 design spanning 21.66 kilometers.

“The Pahu–Tamparuli road is also set to be upgraded with an R4 design over 15.72 kilometers,” he said in a statement.

Madius, who is also the Assemblyman for Tamparuli, mentioned that the project is expected to proceed with the next package after the current phase of the Pan Borneo Sabah is completed.

Earlier in his question, Madius asked the Ministry of Works whether the Government plans to upgrade the Tamparuli – Ranau road to a highway due to the worsening traffic congestion.

Ahmad Maslan responded that there are currently no plans, as the latest data from 2024 shows that the Level of Service (LOS) on that road is still at LOS A, meaning it can still accommodate the existing traffic flow.

However, the Pontian MP agreed with Madius’s suggestion to conduct a review to assess the current LOS, considering the data used is from two years ago.

“I will instruct the JKR to conduct a study on the actual LOS related to the Tamparuli town and what was mentioned about Tuaran earlier.

“As a temporary measure, we will discuss with the traffic authorities to ensure the next steps are taken,” he said.
