Sabah needs to be ready for how state rights will be interpreted in the future – Salleh

KOTA KINABALU: Political scientist Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak expressed that Sarawak’s choice to contest the Petroleum Development Act 1974, the Continental Shelf Act 1966, and the Petroleum Mining Act 1966 has brought forth significant inquiries regarding petroleum rights and the distribution of power within the Federation.

He noted that Sabah is not directly part of this case; however, the ruling may affect the interpretation of state rights moving forward.

“We might opt to wait and observe. Concurrently, Sabah needs to be ready — both legally and in terms of policy.

“The fundamental question is: are we prepared if the constitutional framework shifts?” he stated in his Facebook post.

The former Chief Minister of Sabah emphasised that this matter is not about confrontation; rather, it is focused on achieving clarity and safeguarding our long-term interests.

“Now is the moment for Sabah to reflect thoughtfully, act judiciously, and ensure our future remains secure within a just and balanced Federation,” Salleh remarked.
