Increase in electricity rates in Sabah aligned with the high operational costs of energy supply – Jeffery Nor

KOTA KINABALU: Putatan UMNO Chief Jeffery Nor Mohamad stated that the rise in electricity rates in Sabah is necessary for providing better electricity services to the people of Sabah.

Jeffery acknowledged that he was aware of this increase while serving on the board of SESB in the past.

He mentioned that the increase is unavoidable due to the urgent need arising from operational costs being higher than the selling price of energy.

Jeffery noted that the average base tariff has risen from 34.25 cents to 39.70 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), reflecting a 15 percent increase.

“In reality, the actual required tariff is 45.08 cents per kWh, meaning the accepted increase is only to 39.70 cents per kWh.

“As a result, the federal government’s subsidy will decrease to RM849 million for the years 2026 to 2027,” he said in a statement today.

In this regard, Jeffery suggested that the 15% increase be split into two phases, with the first six months dedicated to adjustment and rebates for eligible recipients, as sudden costs will relate to the price of consumer materials.

“I agree with the discounts provided to eligible recipients, and I want to see them consistently applied to avoid other social issues like electricity theft and more,” he said.

Jeffery also expressed hope that the new tariff increase will enable SESB to be more resilient and efficient in producing more consistent electricity and exploring new opportunities for additional energy sources that are more environmentally friendly.

He also extended his gratitude to SESB for providing many discounts to those who qualify.
