KOTA KINABALU: State Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Industry Datuk Jamawi Jaafar made a working visit to the Likas Fisheries Complex on Monday.
The purpose of the visit was to gain insight as well as a comprehensive understanding of the structure and functions of the Sabah Fisheries Department, and to identify issues and seek solutions to enhance the quality of services provided by the department.
During the visit, Jamawi was given a briefing by the Director of Fisheries Sabah, Datin Dr Shuhada Mustapha, and the Senior Assistant Director of Biosecurity, Matlan @ Abdul Rahim Thaufeck.
Also present was the Deputy Permanent Secretary II of the ministry, Maria David Edick.
In his speech, Jamawi emphasised the ministry’s desire to make services more accessible to the public; thus, all agencies under the ministry need to carry out this mandate thoroughly.
He also informed us that the staff at the three main agencies, namely the Fisheries Department, the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM), and SAFMA, should not compete but rather complement each other so that every function and role performed can maximise benefits for the people.
Jamawi also requested the Fisheries Department to provide necessities such as fish seeds and related inputs to support the upcoming Kitchen Garden Tour programme.
In a separate event, Jamawi, along with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Datuk Leonard Stephen Poyong, attended a meeting of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry Malaysia Cooperative (KOTANI).
