Chan Urges PDRM to Investigate Viral Video of Child Abuse

KOTA KINABALU: In response to a video circulating widely on social media today, which allegedly shows a man physically assaulting a child, DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Sabah Chief Chan Loong Wei said he was deeply shocked and angered by the incident and strongly urged the police to immediately open an investigation and take firm action in accordance with the law.

Chan stressed that any form of abuse or violence against children constitutes a serious violation of fundamental children’s rights.

He said this may result in long-term, profound, and irreversible harm to a child’s physical and psychological development.

“Such acts must never be tolerated or allowed to continue unchecked.

“Children are among the most vulnerable members of society and are those most in need of protection.

“Regardless of family background or circumstances, violence must never be justified, normalised, or concealed,” he said in a statement today.

Chan emphasised that if the video is verified to be authentic, authorities must act swiftly and decisively.

He said this includes ensuring the immediate safety and well-being of the affected children, providing necessary medical treatment and psychological support, conducting a comprehensive investigation, and holding the perpetrator fully accountable under the law.

“Authorities should also assess whether the case involves domestic violence, child abuse, or other criminal offences and pursue appropriate legal action,” he added.

Chan also called on members of the public to prioritise the rights and welfare of the children when discussing or sharing the incident online and to refrain from actions that may cause further harm or secondary trauma.

“Individuals with relevant information or evidence are urged to come forward to assist the police or relevant welfare agencies.

“Protecting children is a moral and social red line that must never be crossed,” Chan said.

He expressed hope that the police will handle this case with the utmost seriousness and called on the government, law enforcement agencies, and society at large to work together to ensure that every child can grow up in a safe environment, free from fear and violence
