SAPP Candidate Unveils Development Aspirations, Demands Autonomy for Sabah

SANDAKAN : Henley Liew Yun Ye, the SAPP candidate for the Tanjong Papat state seat, held a meet-and-greet session with approximately 50 residents at Jambatan 17, Kampung Melayu Sim-Sim, last night.

Speaking at a press conference after the event, he outlined his vision for Sandakan particularly Tanjong Papat should he be elected as its representative.

Henley Liew expressed his intention to leverage his strengths in administration and leadership to drive social well-being and economic prosperity for the people of Sandakan, particularly in Tanjong Papat. He is determined to address socio-economic issues by focusing on development programs that have a positive impact on the community.

He raised concerns about the state’s financial management, citing a statement by Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan, who revealed that a large portion of the RM6.7 billion in annual development funds is often returned unused. Consequently, he fully supports the proposal for unspent federal funds to be placed in a state trust to ensure they are fully utilized for Sabah’s development.

Using Sarawak as a benchmark, Henley Liew questioned why Sabah has not been able to emulate its neighbuor’s success. He claimed that leaders in Peninsular Malaysia are wary of Sabah following Sarawak’s political leadership model and are attempting to maintain political dominance over the state.

He firmly stated his resolve to fight for Sabah’s 40% entitlement under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), asserting, “We are not beggars.” He emphasized the principle of “Our house, we take care of it,” stating that administrative autonomy through governance by local parties and leaders is crucial.

Henley Liew also challenged all qualified local leaders to step forward and offer their service to the people through local political platforms.

He expressed his hope for the opportunity to serve and is confident that he can bring optimal benefits to the people of Sabah through his excellent leadership perspective.

Also present was SAPP Tanjong Papat Election Campaign Manager Thomas Lau Chi Keong.
