TAWAU: The name Datuk Ruji Ubi is well-known among the public administration community in the country, yet few are aware that he is actually a native of Tawau, hailing from Kampung Sungai Haji Matahir, Merotai.
According to Mohd. Zaki Harry Susanto, a family acquaintance and also a local from Tawau, Ruji was born and raised in that village before moving away to further his education and build a career in public service.
“My late grandfather also came from Kampung Sungai Haji Matahir, Merotai, and I can confirm that Ruji has many friends and relatives who still live in that village. Despite serving for a long time outside of Sabah, Datuk Ruji is still remembered as a successful son of the village,” he said when met here yesterday.
Ruji received his early education at several primary and secondary schools around Tawau before continuing his studies at a higher level outside of Sabah. His passion for acquiring knowledge laid the foundation for his success in reaching the highest levels of public service in the country.
His service record reflects an outstanding career, having held various significant positions both within and outside of Sabah. Among the roles he has held are Director General of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) and Deputy Federal Secretary of Sabah.
Additionally, he has served as the Director of the Sabah State Development Office and has held the positions of Deputy Secretary General (KSU) and Secretary General in several federal ministries such as the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of National Unity.
Mohd. Zaki stated that even while fulfilling significant responsibilities at the federal level, Ruji has never forgotten his birthplace and has also paid attention to the development of the Merotai and Kalabakan areas.
Among his significant contributions is the construction project of the Masjid Kampung Sungai Haji Matahir, which has now become a new landmark in the area. Additionally, Ruji has also assisted in the renovation efforts of Sekolah Kebangsaan Kalabakan,” he explained.
“Ruji has played a crucial role in establishing the Kalabakan branch of the Department of National Registration (JPN) and ensuring the realization of the new District Police Headquarters (IPD) Kalabakan, which is currently in the tender process.”
For the local residents, Ruji is not only a symbol of success for the children of Merotai in the diaspora but also an example of a Tawau native who never forgets his roots, no matter where he is.
