Can Dr Victor defeat Dr Jeffrey in the stronghold of Tambunan?

KOTA KINABALU: Once upon a time, Tambunan was the site of a fierce battle where British forces ultimately triumphed over Sabah warrior Mat Salleh at his last stronghold in Tibabar.

On November 29, a significant ‘political war’ is anticipated between two prominent local figures: the head of the Gagasan Rakyat Tambunan, Dato’ Dr. Victor P. Paut, and the President of STAR, Datuk Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan.

Many political observers believe that the contest in DUN Tambunan, a stronghold for Dr. Jeffrey, will be a focal point in the upcoming Sabah state election.

They suggest that barring any unforeseen circumstances, both leaders will face off in a ‘Round 1’ Sailang battle.

The question remains: can newcomer Dr. Victor, in the political landscape, topple veteran Sabah politician Dr Jeffrey in DUN Tambunan?

Most observers and political analysts find the answer difficult to predict or still uncertain.

They agree that recent political developments, somewhat tainted by various integrity issues, may influence public support for the candidates running.

In addition to GRS and STAR, KDM and Warisan are expected to field candidates in Tambunan.

Dr. Jeffrey is seen as leveraging his experience and grassroots influence that has long been established in Tambunan.

On the other hand, Dr. Victor P. Paut is inclined to present a fresh approach, focusing on development, digitalization, and economic opportunities for the new generation of Tambunan.

He is also viewed as a face of the reform wave, carrying a message of youth unity and continuity of development under the GRS banner.

Last Saturday, Dr. Victor expressed his determination to realize the people’s dream of transforming the Tambunan District towards excellence.

“From the very beginning, I have been committed to being the leader of Tambunan. I do not hesitate because I believe the people of Tambunan possess an extraordinary fighting spirit and great potential to elevate this district to a better level than before,” Dr. Victor was quoted as saying.

In the 2020 Sabah state general election, Dr. Jeffrey retained the Tambunan DUN seat with a majority of 6,792 votes.
