Will GBS bring a fresh perspective to the political scene in Sabah?

By Bob Munang JP

KOTA KINABALU: I warmly welcome the proposal by Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, a long-time advocate of Sabah’s rights, to form a truly Sabahan-based political pact (GBS).

This proposal deserves serious and open-minded consideration from all Sabah-based parties such as PBS, Warisan, LDP, Anak Negeri, Impian, PKDM, and so forth, including PBRS and UPKO, which are currently within BN and PH respectively.

While those in Gagasan may find it awkward in joining GBS but they should reflect sincerely and give this historic idea a fair chance. They will not be in politics forever. Why not just give it a go and be proud of it, come what may.

The timing could not be more crucial because to me Sabah stands at the final crossroads before the next general election, expected before 2027. That’s when the real battle starts.

But beyond party lines and political calculations, let us also be honest with ourselves. Dr Jeffrey will not be in politics forever. Whatever one’s views about him, no one can deny his unwavering dedication to defending Sabah’s rights and dignity. For over four decades, he has devoted his prime years fighting for Sabah by carrying the torch of the 20 Points and MA63, often at great personal cost, when few dared to speak out.

Before he finally calls it a day, we as Sabahans have a rare opportunity to rally behind his call for unity i.e. to form one strong, homegrown Sabahan bloc that truly represents our people, our aspirations, and our destiny. This is not about personalities; it is about building an enduring Sabahan political force that will continue the struggle for equality, autonomy, and dignity within the federation of Malaysia.

If Sarawak can stand united and strong, so can Sabah but only if we put aside our divisions, suspicions, and misunderstandings. Let us come together not for any one man, but for the future of Sabah, so that generations to come can proudly say: when the moment came, Sabahans stood as one.

This is our moment. Let us make it count the aspirations that we all yearn for. Let us do it now. Let us not procrastinate.
