Sabah BN Has Never Lost at the Polls; 2018 Downfall Due to Betrayal – Bung Moktar

KOTA KINABALU: The Chairman of Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN), Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, stressed that the fall of the BN government in 2018 was not due to the people’s rejection at the polls, but rather the result of betrayal by several state assemblymen (ADUN) who switched parties after the election results were announced.

Bung, who is also the SabahUMNO Chief, said that history shows BN Sabah has never been defeated by the people’s mandate, but rather collapsed due to the actions of a few representatives who refused to stand with the BN central government, which at that time was in opposition.

“This action not only jeopardizes the political stability of Sabah but also betrays the mandate given by the people who chose BN as the majority party through a legitimate democratic process,” he said in a statement.

He noted that this incident should serve as a significant lesson for the people of Sabah not to allow their future to be dictated by party-hopping politics.

“Modern politics is no longer about who holds power, but about legitimacy and trust. When a government changes not because of the people’s will, but due to the betrayal of a mandate, what collapses is not just the government, but the institutions, morals, and the political dignity of the state itself,” he remarked.

Bung Moktar also pointed out that Sabah is currently facing what is termed as ‘democratic fatigue,’ which refers to the people’s exhaustion with politics that lack principles and consistency.

“Every episode of party-hopping is not just a political drama, but it harms the social contract between the people and their leaders. A government born from betrayal cannot foster confidence. Without confidence, there will be no stability that can endure.”

He stressed that stability does not arise from slogans, but from leadership integrity and the strength of the system.
