The cancellation of the Malaysia Day celebration is justified; let us pray for the safety of the people of Sabah – Priscella Peter

KOTA KINABALU:The Democratic People’s Welfare Party (KDM) has welcomed the government’s decision to cancel the Malaysia Day celebration scheduled to take place at Padang Merdeka here tomorrow.

Acting President of KDM, Priscella Peter, stated that this decision is appropriate, not only due to the unpredictable weather conditions at this time but also because of the difficulties faced by the people due to floods and landslides.

She emphasised that the priority now is to assist the victims of the floods and landslides.”Malaysia Day is indeed a day we should remember and honour, but it is somewhat inappropriate to celebrate it with festivities while the people are currently facing hardships.

” As we honour Malaysia Day tomorrow, let us also pray for the people in this state, especially those affected by the floods and landslides, that their affairs may be eased. My condolences also go to the families of the victims who have lost their lives,” she said in a statement today.

Priscella also mentioned that the party will mobilise its team to assist the victims in the affected areas.

Earlier, the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Environment, Datuk Christina Liew, announced the cancellation of the Malaysia Day celebration at Padang Merdeka here tomorrow.

Christina, who is also the Chairperson of the Malaysia Day Celebration for the State of Sabah 2025, stated that the cancellation is due to the current unpredictable weather conditions.

The Chairman of DAP Sabah, Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, had previously also called for the cancellation of this year’s Malaysia Day celebration due to the natural disasters affecting Sabah.

He stated that the focus should be on efforts to assist the victims of the floods and landslides, as well as on the recovery from the damage caused by these natural disasters.
