KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Dexter Lau, President of the Malaysia–China Chamber of Commerce (Sabah), rolled up his sleeves and took to the kitchen, bringing a unique experience to the second wave of the Platinum Club Afternoon Tea gathering.

In preparation for the event, the president approached it with meticulous care. A week prior, he draughted the menu, listing every required ingredient in detail, and began marinating and prepping the food the day before the gathering, personally overseeing every step of the cooking process.

His dedication and professionalism rivalled that of a professional chef, with each dish presenting a perfect balance of colour, aroma, and flavour—delighting members’ palates while demonstrating the president’s versatile talents, both in the boardroom and the kitchen.

From the very start of the event, the aroma of the freshly prepared dishes filled the venue, captivating members and earning widespread admiration for Datuk Dexter’s culinary skills. The afternoon tea was not just a feast for the senses but also a warm and heartfelt gathering, reflecting the president’s genuine care and attention toward the members.

Originally, attendance was limited to 50 members, but the news of the President personally cooking drew significant interest. To ensure no member was left disappointed, the Chamber ultimately adopted a “first-come, all welcome” approach, allowing all registered members to attend. The atmosphere was even more vibrant than previous gatherings. Special guests included Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu Dr Zhu Xinglong, Deputy Xue XiaoNing and Ouyang Hui Feng and representatives from the Chinese Consulate-General in Kota Kinabalu; Political Secretary from the High Commission of the Republic of Singapore Bhargav Sriganesh and Nicole Neo; Representative of the Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities and Member of Parliament for Kota Kinabalu, Datuk Chan Foong Hin Kaven Lee; and officials, as well as the Chamber’s National President Loo Kok Seong and the representatives from the Central Council, whose presence added further prestige and significance to the event.

The Platinum Club Afternoon Tea provides a relaxed and welcoming platform for both senior and new members to connect. While enjoying the culinary delights, members shared business insights, exchanged life experiences, learned from one another, and expanded their networks, strengthening mutual understanding and friendship. Laughter resonated throughout the venue, with many treasured photos and memories captured in a joyful atmosphere.

Datuk Dexter Lau also shared his personal reflections on cooking: “From selecting ingredients to preparation and cooking, each step deepened my understanding of the importance of putting one’s heart into everything. I hope that through my actions, I can convey care and enthusiasm to every member, while also gaining a profound appreciation for the challenges professional chefs face.”

He said, the Platinum Club Afternoon Tea was not only a culinary feast but also a warm, home-like platform for interaction, allowing members to expand networks, explore collaboration opportunities, and gain business inspiration in a relaxed setting—injecting real value into enterprise strategy and business growth.

Earlier, Council Member and Platinum Club Coordinator Benny Hon expressed special thanks to the President for presenting his “kitchen showcase,” meticulously preparing every dish and adding both flavor and warmth to the afternoon tea.

During the event, National President Loo Kok Seong also praised Datuk Dexter Lau as “truly impressive” and encouraged all members to make full use of the Chamber’s platform and seize opportunities. He expressed his hope that, through the momentum and energy of the Sabah branch, other branches could be inspired to grow together.

On the other hand, Dr. Zhu Xinglong, Consul General of China in Kota Kinabalu, remarked, “Since assuming my post, I have been deeply impressed by the unity, competence, and dynamism of the people of Sabah. It is truly remarkable that such a young president, Datuk Dexter Lau, was able to represent Sabah at the national commemoration on September 3. Furthermore, with the strong and growing economic and trade relations between China and Sabah, I hope that Chinese-Malaysian entrepreneurs will not only visit China to learn and conduct business, but also bring advanced technologies and business experience back to Sabah, fostering the growth of local enterprises while promoting bilateral economic and business cooperation, achieving mutually beneficial, two-way development.”
The venue was filled with enticing aromas and constant laughter. While enjoying the delicious dishes, members shared business insights, exchanged life experiences, and learned from one another, applying their takeaways to their respective companies and business development—an invaluable opportunity for expanding businesses and enhancing corporate competitiveness that money simply cannot buy.
