KOTA KINABALU: Sabah UMNO asserts that the party has never been rejected by the people, let alone lost in state elections. Instead, the government formed in 2018 was the result of betrayal by several elected representatives who jumped ship.
Sabah UMNO Assistant Secretary, Alfian Sambas, said the claim by the Deputy Head of the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Kiulu Division, Datuk George Teo, that UMNO has lost its political dominance in the state is a distorted statement and intended to hoodwink the people.
“First of all, Sabah UMNO has never lost. The real fact is, on the nite of GE14, BN and STAR had already formed a government with a simple majority.
“However, on May 12, 2018, six BN assemblymen defected to join Warisan, causing the government to change hands.
“That’s not a victory, it’s a betrayal. The people have never rejected UMNO; it is the elected representatives who betrayed the mandate for positions,” he emphasised in a statement regarding the matter.
According to Alfian, George Teo is trying to cover up the true history by claiming that the people rejected UMNO in 2018, when in reality, the government formed after that only gained power after the political defection of several BN assemblymen along with UPKO and other parties.
“George wants to teach UMNO about Sabah politics, even the party he supports today exists on the basis of political opportunism.
“UMNO has never sold out its principles. Accusing UMNO of being power-hungry is like clapping in a tray of water; it will eventually splash back in your own face.
“Today, GRS stands on a foundation of betrayal, not the people’s mandate.
“If there hadn’t been a political leap, that government wouldn’t have existed,” he said.
He also reminded George that the Kiulu seat was unlikely to remain without the support and cooperation of BN.
“Don’t be arrogant, as if victory is the absolute property of his party. In reality, UMNO BN has its own strategy and structure. We learn from history. PRN-17, BN will not be bitten by the same snake in the same hole,” he said.
Alfian further clarified that a party that only wins a few seats but then ‘begs’ for cooperation to form a government cannot be considered a party of dignity.
A message for George Teo: don’t be a history fool. UMNO Sabah has never lost. The losers are the integrity of those who jumped for positions. “What’s left behind isn’t UMNO, but petty leaders who live off the political scraps of others,” he added. –
