Parking Lot Incident Was Politicised Due to My Sister’s Role,” Says Gary Tan

SANDAKAN: A recent incident involving an altercation in the parking lot of Prima Square has allegedly been misrepresented and exploited for political gain by certain parties, according to a statement released by Gary Tan Ka Leek in response to initial media reports.

“I was waiting for a parking spot that was becoming available at Prima Square when Chan Fook Chiu aggressively cut in and forcibly took the parking space I was anticipating. I exited my vehicle to enquire about his actions, but instead of responding civilly, he immediately began shouting profanities and verbally abusing me.

Without warning, Chan completely lost his temper and threw the first punch directly at my face. This unprovoked physical assault naturally led to a defensive reaction and subsequent altercation. Several witnesses can confirm this sequence of events, including my girlfriend, who is an educator, and another friend who was present.

Gary wants to make it clear that his sister, Liau Fui Fui, was not present during the initial confrontation. She was inside a restaurant at the time and only came out after the commotion began. Her immediate action was to contact the police and help de-escalate the situation.

When policemen arrived on the scene, Chan himself admitted to throwing the first punch and initiating the physical confrontation. It is therefore deeply disappointing that he later filed a false police report claiming he was gang assaulted. I believe this malicious falsehood was spread specifically because of my sister’s political position, which has led to the unnecessary politicisation of what should have been a straightforward matter.

Gary strongly condemned both the initial physical assault by Chan and the subsequent fabrication of facts. He would not hesitate to pursue all available legal avenues to clear his name and prevent the continued spread of false information. The truth matters, and Gary trusts that the public would see through these manipulated narratives.”
