BANGKOK: Following the recent Thai court ruling that ousted Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Thailand’s acting PM Phumtham Wechayachai has filed a request to dissolve parliament after the largest opposition party endorsed a competing candidate to lead the nation.
The ruling Pheu Thai party submitted the “house dissolution decree” on Wednesday, which is now pending royal approval, as stated by party secretary-general Sorawong Thienthong.
This decision to dissolve parliament was made promptly after the People’s Party, a significant opposition faction in Thailand’s parliament, announced its support for a rival from Pheu Thai, the Bhumjaithai Party, to establish the next government.
In light of Prime Minister Paetongtarn’s removal, Pheu Thai has been working quickly to consolidate support for its vulnerable coalition government, which holds a narrow majority.
On Wednesday, People’s Party leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut informed reporters that his party’s 143 lawmakers had “consented to support” Bhumjaithai leader Anutin Charnvirakul, a conservative business magnate, to assume the role of the next prime minister, which is likely to secure him majority backing in parliament
