KOTA KINABALU: The Democratic People’s Welfare Party (KDM) should nominate a leader from the local party as a candidate for the Chief Minister of Sabah if they compete for more than 40 seats in the 17th State Election (PRN17).
Many political observers believe that any party contesting more than half of the 73 state assembly seats at stake in Sabah should take this step, thereby demonstrating that the party is capable of being the backbone of the state government after the election.
For now, among the figures touted as potential candidates for this position is the former Assistant Minister of Sabah and Deputy President of KDM, Datuk Wetrom Bahanda.
Social activist Remy Majangkim stated that the strategy of naming a preferred candidate for the Chief Minister role is timely and should be supported by all parties.
“Before the Sabah State Assembly is dissolved, it is advisable for the local party KDM to name a Chief Minister candidate.
“This is because public perception leans towards the possibility that KDM could win a significant number of seats if they indeed contest more than 40 seats,” he mentioned in a recent social media post.
Regarding the possibility of KDM naming Wetrom, Remy noted that the Kota Marudu MP is among the experienced political figures who could be put forward.
“I see Wetrom as quite experienced and possessing unique advantages, especially since he has previously held the position of Assistant Minister in the GRS government before joining the KDM part.
“In addition, Wetrom has a relevant qualification, which is a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Development from UPM,” he said
Previously, KDM expressed its readiness to contest more than 40 state assembly seats in the upcoming election.
The party that won 38 seats in PRN17 will form a new state government in Sabah.
