TONGOD: The rapid growth of social media represents a new form of national challenge that could lead to societal congestion if not addressed properly.
Kuamut state assemblyman Datuk Masiung Banah voiced his concerns regarding the dissemination of false news and short videos on social platforms, viewing it as a threat to independence.
“The escalating debates on various social media platforms like TikTok, Reels, WhatsApp Groups, and YouTube aimed at attacking the government and institutions can undermine the nation’s independent governance,” he stated.
Masiung spoke to the media following the launch of the Gemilang Merdeka Travel Convoy Program at the Tongod Open Square yesterday morning.
He noted that the content being shared is often unrefined and serves as a potent weapon for certain groups to target others, leading to slander and sedition.
The chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Authority (LPPB) emphasized that the history of independence should be valued by all communities, regardless of their background or age.
“The younger generation must understand that the independence we enjoy today is the result of the struggles of our past leaders.
“In Malaysia, we achieved freedom from colonizers without bloodshed, unlike many other countries where people had to resort to arms to claim their independence.
Merdeka does not imply that we should neglect the development and socioeconomic aspects that contribute to the stability of our multi-racial society,” he remarked.
Masiung pointed out that many young individuals today perceive independence merely as liberation from colonial rule, the ‘independent’ slogan, and the mere act of displaying the Jalur Gemilang.
However, he stressed that young people must recognize that true independence of the spirit and mind should be cultivated through the development of self-esteem, which is rooted in four key areas: religion, education, morals, and culture.
Sabah Information Department director Mrs. Jainisah Mohd Noor and Tongod District Officer Mohd Yuseri Yusof, were among the 1,000 Tongod residents who attended the Jalur Gemilang Independence Adventure.
