KOTA KINABALU: In an election where no single party has a clear advantage, the strength of the party alone is insufficient for securing a win, stated former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.
He mentioned that in such a balanced scenario, the candidate becomes the pivotal element.
“Candidates who are trustworthy, personable, and connected to the community are more likely to influence the election results.
“Those who actively engage with the public, comprehend local concerns, and maintain robust grassroots connections will find it easier to garner support,” he expressed in his recent Facebook update.
Salleh emphasised that voters also evaluate candidates on a personal level—who can be trusted, who can effectively represent their interests, and who is committed to advocating for their constituency.
For this reason, he noted that parties cannot depend solely on their reputation. In a competitive race, candidates must be presented as the embodiment of the cause.
Salleh concluded that when no party holds dominance, the candidate is crucial for achieving victory.
