Sabah Hosts Workshop on F-gases Emissions to Strengthen Malaysia’s Climate Reporting

KOTA KINABALU: In a significant step towards bolstering Malaysia’s climate action commitments, the Sabah Climate Change Action Council, through its secretariat – the Sabah Forestry Department, in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), hosted a crucial workshop on fluorinated gases (F-gases) here recently.

The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from government and the private sector to enhance capacity for the national climate change reporting under the Paris Agreement’s Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF).

The workshop aimed to raise awareness on the national climate reporting obligations and the specific role of F-gases within the national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory.

A key objective was to foster discussion and collaboration with stakeholders in Sabah on this crucial issue.

The initiative is part of a broader cooperation agreement between the Malaysian and Japanese governments to strengthen the institutional and technical capabilities for preparing Malaysia’s Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The event attracted broad participation from 27 organisations, demonstrating extensive cross-sector engagement.

Attendees included representatives from essential government bodies such as the Ministry of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship (MIDE) and the Environment Protection Department (EPD).

The private sector was significantly represented by key stakeholders from the cooling, refrigeration, and industrial sectors, including major shopping malls, hotels, and prominent industry associations like the Federation of Sabah Industries.

This diverse participation underscores the collaborative efforts required for effective management and reduction of F-gas emissions.
