TAWAU: The low river water levels and leaking pipe repairs are the reasons Tawau residents are currently experiencing a prolonged water crisis that has lasted for three days.
The President of the Sabah People’s Hope Party, Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah, stated that they have received numerous complaints and calls regarding the ongoing water issues in Tawau over the past few days.
He mentioned that Tawau residents have had to rely entirely on bottled water as a temporary solution to manage their daily lives.
“The Sabah Water Department should have acted sooner to prevent this issue from burdening the Tawau community, which could damage the state government’s image.
“Water is a daily necessity for both residents and traders in Tawau. How long can they endure this situation, as it seems to be poorly managed in the near term?” he said today.
Liew noted that he has been informed that the river water levels remain low, indicating that this problem is likely to recur in the future.
“The staff at the Sabah Water Department have decades of experience managing water in Tawau, yet there is still no solution to this issue.
“I have contacted the Sabah Minister of Works, Datuk Shahelmy Yahya, the Tawau District Water Engineer, and the President of the Tawau Municipal Council (MPT), and they will hold an urgent discussion to resolve this matter,” Liew explained.
He expressed confidence that many more residents and villages in the Tawau area are affected by the lack of water experienced over the past few days.
“However, they have to manage their own water needs due to a loss of trust in the Sabah Water Department.
“My house also has no water… I receive daily complaints about the water shortage from villagers… We are trying to provide water supply assistance,” he said.
