Jeffery Nor calls on SMM to temporarily suspend operations

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah UMNO Election Director, Gundohing Jeffery Nor Mohamed,  suggested that the operations of Sabah Mineral Management Sdn Bhd (SMM) be temporarily suspended until a full investigation is conducted into the company.

In making the call, Jeffery, who is also the Putatan UMNO Chief, said the move was important due to various negative and controversial stories linking SMM.

Jeffery said there was an urgent need for a neutral body to conduct a ‘forensic audit’ to examine all possible occurrences within the company’s operations.

“The back-and-forth exchange of answers between the company and the media is a bad culture that leads to various assumptions from the public,” he said in a statement today.

According to Jeffery, Sabah’s ‘assets’ need to be well-maintained because they involve the interests of future generations.

“Various questions need to be answered concretely because SMM is also seen as a trustee of the people of Sabah, and our rights must be protected as best as possible.

“The basic principle is that any approval involving a large land area must be announced to the public to prevent leaks and uphold the principle of transparency,” he said.

Jeffery said the proposal is believed to ensure that the term “integrity” can be truly implemented and the rights of the people of Sabah can be protected forever.
