What will the future hold for Sabah Air?

By Remy Majangkim

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah State Government possesses an esteemed aviation license that allows it to operate aircraft for specific purposes, including both private and commercial flights.

Founded in 1975, Sabah Air Aviation offers a diverse range of services, such as aerial filming, photography, mapping, medical evacuation (Medevac), flying doctor services, search and rescue missions (SAR), cargo transportation, private transportation, and notably, VVIP travel.

Sabah Air Aviation is funded directly by the State Finance Department. In the recent supplementary bill discussion in the Dewan Undangan Negeri, the State allocated RM 66 million, along with an additional RM 5.8 million for transportation and logistics.

Adun Moyog, Datuk Darrel Leiking, emphasised the importance of mindful spending by the government on VVIP transportation. He stated that any expenditures made by the current government should reflect the state’s commitment and should not be perceived as leisure or entitlement.

In a recent conversation with retired Captain Kamil Abu Bakar, the former Director of Flight Operations at Malaysia Airlines, we discussed the possibility of Sabah starting its own passenger plane services. Sabah Air Aviation already possesses the required license; all that is needed is the willpower and effective management to oversee operations in our skies.

Sarawak has just launched its airline, Borneo Air. Why don’t we have our own airline as well? Why must the Sabah government continue to support AirAsia or Batik Air? There is a substantial tourist market coming from China and Korea, as well as Japan, especially during the winter months.

Sabah Air should focus on establishing credibility and gaining experience. Initially, the airline should concentrate on domestic routes as well as select ASEAN routes. In addition to providing affordable services to our Sabahans, this will serve to boost the state’s tourism industry.

The story of Virgin Airlines captured my attention when Richard Branson launched his transatlantic service with an idle Boeing plane.

Imagine the possibilities! Wishing you all a great weekend.
