KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah People’s Hope Party (PHRS), a member of the Sabah People’s Coalition (GRS), is prepared to compete in the Merotai and Kukusan State Assembly if given the chance and has already identified suitable candidates.
PHRS President Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah stated that the support and confidence of the people in both the Merotai and Kukusan constituencies towards the party are very strong, and analysis at the local level indicates that PHRS can contribute these seats to GRS in the upcoming State Election (PRN).
He mentioned that the party is very realistic and aims for these two state seats based on the support from the people there, which he likened to ‘our home’ or a stronghold for PHRS.
“We must prioritize ‘our home’ first (the place where we have influence). That is why I specifically mentioned the Merotai and Kukusan state seats that we are eyeing for the upcoming PRN.
*Anyone can request, but what matters is whether those who ask and contest can win or not.
“We openly declare our willingness and readiness to contest and hope that the leadership of GRS will consider it,” he said here today.
Liew noted that the Kukusan state seat is currently held by Datuk Rina binti Jainal, who is a member of PHRS, while he himself has previously served as the representative for the Merotai constituency.
However, the former Minister of Youth and Sports of Sabah stated that PHRS remains compliant with any decisions made by GRS regarding the allocation of seats to its component parties.
When asked if Liew is willing to contest in the Merotai seat if it is allocated to PHRS, he replied: “I am ready to contest and fight to contribute to GRS’s victory.”
“We will also place a candidate with the potential to win to reclaim the Kukusan seat.
“We leave it to the Chief Minister to make the right decision before taking action to dissolve the Sabah Assembly, as the current term is expected to end this November.
“We must enter the PRN arena fully prepared, without rushing, as the Chief Minister still has ample time,” he stated.
Liew expressed confidence that, based on the current performance of the GRS government, the people will grant them another opportunity to govern after PRN17. I
n the 2020 PRN, Sarifuddin bin Hata represented Warisan and won the DUN Merotai seat by a majority of 1,587 votes.
