Time for Menggatal hillside villagers to have access to clean treated water

KOTA KINABALU: After decades of relying entirely on gravity-fed water supply, hundreds of residents in numerous villages in the Menggatal hillside area feel it is time for them to have access to clean and reliable water.

Inanam KDM chief, Datuk George Guntarik, stated that the lack of treated clean water supply is one of the main issues raised by the residents during his recent visits to the villages.

“Most residents, including those in Kg Tenggiling, have expressed their hope that the government will shift its paradigm and allocate funds to implement clean water supply projects in the Menggatal hillside area.

“It is hard to imagine their problems because, apart from gravity-fed water, they rely solely on rainwater for daily activities such as bathing and washing, and during the dry season, their lives become even more challenging.

“According to the villagers, during rainy periods, the gravity-fed water is murky. They have repeatedly appealed to the government for assistance, but so far, their pleas have not received a positive response,” he said.

George made these remarks in a recent social media post.

He also mentioned that he has received complaints regarding village lands that have not been officially gazetted.

He noted that most of the affected villages have long been inhabited predominantly by “Bumiputera” people and hopes that their appeals will be given due attention.

“Similarly, the village roads in the area are narrow and small, and they should be upgraded for the benefit of all,” he added
