Salleh advocates for a more inclusive Sabah bureaucracy

KOTA KINABALU: A robust and reliable bureaucracy should mirror the diverse ethnic and religious landscape of Sabah, remarked former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.

“When one group appears to dominate, it may result in others feeling marginalised — impacting unity, morale, and public trust,” he expressed in his recent Facebook update.

Consequently, Salleh emphasised that while we strive for a fairer distribution of power in politics, we must also reconsider the framework of our public services.

“Sabah must embrace the concept of representative meritocracy — enabling all qualified Sabahans, including Bumiputera Muslim, Bumiputera non-Muslim, and non-Bumiputera, to have genuine and equal chances to fulfil significant roles within the government,” he said.

Looking ahead, the Usukan assemblyman suggested the need for improved balance in hiring, promotions, and leadership training within the civil service.

“Where applicable, initiatives should be taken to boost participation from under-represented communities, without sacrificing merit,” he continued.

According to Salleh, Sabah’s future hinges on inclusion rather than exclusion.

“It is imperative to ensure that our institutions authentically represent the populace they serve,” he said.
