Muslims Encouraged to Celebrate Aidilfitri Moderately – Salleh

KOTA KINABALU: Muslims are encouraged to celebrate Aidilfitri in a modest manner, avoiding overspending that could lead to personal financial strain.

Former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak emphasised the importance of this approach, noting that many individuals in the country rely heavily on debt.

He pointed out that statistics reveal Malaysia’s household debt has reached 81.2% of GDP in 2023, one of the highest rates in Asia.

“Credit cards, personal loans, and monthly instalments have become commonplace.

“This lifestyle is often perceived as normal, especially with the pressure to appear successful,” he stated in his latest Facebook post.

Salleh, who is also the assemblyman for Usukan, remarked that social media drives many to spend for the sake of image rather than necessity.

“The saying ‘Biar papa asal bergaya’ has evolved from a proverb into a cultural norm.

“The reality is that the cost of living is rising while salaries remain stagnant. There are no additional income sources, leaving many trapped in a cycle of spending → debt → repayment → repeat, with no savings and no peace of mind,” he explained.

Therefore, during this festive season of Syawal, he suggested it is an opportune time for self-reflection, including reducing expenses and avoiding comparisons with others.

“We should start cultivating saving habits and planning our finances.

“Measure your needs against your means. Living simply is not a weakness; it is a sign of wisdom and principle,” he concluded, wishing everyone “Happy Aidilfitri, and may forgiveness be granted.”
