KOTA KINABALU: A devastating earthquake has struck Myanmar and its neighboring country, Thailand, resulting in the destruction of buildings, damage to infrastructure, and over 150 fatalities.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the leader of Myanmar’s military government, reported that at least 144 individuals lost their lives and 730 sustained injuries in Myanmar.

The earthquake also impacted Thailand, where authorities in Bangkok confirmed that at least 10 people were killed.

The magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred near Myanmar’s historic capital, Mandalay, at 12:50 PM local time (06:20 GMT).

This initial quake was followed shortly by a magnitude 6.4 aftershock, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Images from Naypyidaw, Myanmar’s current capital, revealed extensive damage to several buildings designated for civil servants, with rescue teams working to extract victims from the debris.

General Min Aung Hlaing indicated that the death toll may continue to rise and extended an invitation for assistance and donations from “any country.”
