KOTA KINABNALU: A massive increase in the city’s water supply will come into action this year.

It will be the result of the completion of two major water treatment plant projects – one in Kasigui and the other in Telibong – by April and July, respectively, in 2025.

The extra supply will raise the current production of 380 million litres per day (MLD) to meet the needs of some 300,000 registered water consumers in Kota Kinabalu.

The mini-water treatment plant in Kasigui can deliver 5MLD while the Telibong Two (Phase Two) plant production capacity is 80MLD.

It will mean water supply problems will be a thing of the past.

“The extra 65MLD can cope with the water supply demand in Kota Kinabalu for three years,” a Water Department spokesman says, adding that the current demand for water supply in the city is 420MLD.

The main problem areas currently are Putatan, Lok Kawi and certain parts of Inanam and Menggatal, he adds.
And there are long-term plans to meet demand beyond 2030.

Kota Kinabalu city’s water supply currently comes from several treatment plants in Moyog, Kasigui and Telibong.

And, according to the spokesman, project finance will be based on loans from the federal government as well as the state government’s allocation for the maintenance of the water supply system throughout the city.

He also says that efforts are underway to bring down the non-water revenue (NRW) rate of between 34% and 38% in Kota Kinabalu – an important step to ensure the water supply system could meet consumer demand.
