KOTA KINABALU: The National Unity Organisation of Sabah (PERPADUAN) has urged the Madani government to upgrade the existing police station in Tongod to a fully equipped district police headquarters.
Scholastica Taraji, a member of the Supreme Council of the PERPADUAN party, emphasised the importance of this initiative, noting that Tongod is the largest district in Sabah and is facing a rising trend in criminal activities, including drug abuse.
“Local residents indicate that Tongod is the most expansive district in Sabah, which clearly necessitates the establishment of a police station with the status of an IPD, equipped to address various crimes, including the recent robbery cases.”
“As we understand, individuals reporting crimes in Tongod are often directed to travel to the districts of Kinabatangan and Beluran to file their reports, as the Tongod police station lacks full equipment.
“Consider the distance these residents must travel to Kinabatangan to report a crime, which can be hundreds of miles and incur significant costs,” she stated in a statement today.
Scholastica further expressed that PERPADUAN takes this matter seriously and hopes the government will consider the proposal to upgrade the Tongod police station.
“The upgrade of the Tongod police station should be expedited, as it is not only crucial for the local community but also aligns with the development of road networks between Kalimantan and Sabah.
“We envision Tongod becoming a focal point in the future, serving as a transit hub for tourists from Indonesia and Sabah, particularly those travelling to Sandakan and Kudat,” she added.
