Urgent need to establish a body similar to PAC to examine the governance of SMM – Jeffery Nor

KOTA KINABALU: It is time for a state-level committee akin to the federal PAC to be formed in the State Legislative Assembly, comprising members from both the opposition and the state government, said Sabah UMNO Election Director Jeffery Nor Mohamed.

He emphasised that this initiative aims to enhance the’recheck’ system for any entities associated with the state government.

Jeffery also urged the state government to publicly disclose the appointments of board members for state-owned companies and their subsidiaries, similar to practices at the federal level, to promote transparency in these appointments.

“This concerns public interest, as SMM is a subsidiary of SMJ, which oversees the management of minerals in Sabah. Naturally, the people of Sabah want to know which companies are granted prospecting licenses,” he remarked in a statement today.

He added that a state mineral policy is necessary to clarify the direction we intend to take with Sabah’s resources.

Jeffery pointed out that SMM’s revenue sources must be transparent, indicating how much dividend is earned and whether the company’s earnings and dividends are clear.

He noted that this step is crucial to ensure that mineral revenue can be reinvested for the social and physical development of the people of Sabah.

“Comprehensive audit reports on state-owned GLCs must also be presented, as previous reports indicated that many GLCs in Sabah did not provide significant returns to the state government,” he added.
