KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Integrated Pest Management Association (SIPMA), led by Chairman Mervin Liew, has praised DBKK Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah for his bold actions to address cleanliness and food safety in local eateries. Liew, who recently highlighted similar concerns in Penampang and Kepayan, commended the mayor’s commitment to protecting the community and elevating hygiene standards.
“Mayor’s leadership is truly inspiring,” Liew stated. “His swift action in addressing hygiene and pest control issues is exactly what Kota Kinabalu needs. Such decisive measures not only safeguard public health but also boost confidence among local businesses and tourists alike.”
SIPMA has been actively voicing the need for good governance, enhanced cleanliness, and proper pest management since 2023. However, it is important to recognise that challenges in maintaining these standards persist across the region. Liew believes the mayor’s firm stance will lead to a cleaner, more welcoming environment. “SIPMA members are ready to support DBKK’s mission with expertise and resources to create a healthier city,” he added, noting that specific initiatives, such as community training sessions on pest management and regular inspections of local eateries, will be implemented to address these ongoing challenges.
Equally commendable is the work of Tawau Health Officer Dr. Shameer Khan Sulaiman, whose proactive measures to ensure food safety have safeguarded public health. Dr. Shameer’s dedication to addressing health risks has been instrumental in bringing peace of mind to residents and reinforcing strict standards in food safety in Tawau. Additionally, Liew applauded the Health Officer in Penampang for conducting thorough inspections that revealed high pesticide levels in a local hypermarket, demonstrating a commitment to food safety and public health.
SIPMA Chairman Mervin Liew praised both officers, calling them “exemplary figures” who are paving the way for a healthier, safer, and more prosperous Sabah.
This partnership between SIPMA, DBKK, and JKNS reflects a shared vision of Sabah Maju Jaya as a model for cleanliness and food safety while acknowledging the ongoing efforts needed to address the challenges in vital areas.
