SEMPORNA: The Semporna police have received at least five reports from Malaysian tourism operators expressing their dissatisfaction with several Chinese nationals working without valid work permits in the district.
Semporna District Police Chief Supt Mohd Sabri Zainol, in a statement, said that these tourism operators are concerned that the presence of Chinese workers, who are only on visitor passes, could have detrimental effects.
He emphasised that there is a genuine worry that these workers might negatively impact the tourism and business sectors in the area, which is renowned as a world-class travel destination, particularly for diving activities.
According to Mohd Sabri, the complainants have also referred the matter to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture for further action.
