SANDAKAN: St. Mary’s Youth Hostel (SMYH) Sandakan, under the management of Monfort Youth Training Centre, will be organising its “10th Anniversary Charity Nite 2024” dinner at Sabah Hotel Banquet Hall on Aug 10.
This charity event aims to raise funds for the building maintenance to ensure safety and functionality of the building and also for the operating expenses of running the hostel, which are in excess of RM350, 000 per year, fundraising chairperson Michael Raymond Tan said on Wednesday.
The programme is also organised in conjunction with the Montfort Youth Training Centre’s (MYTC) 25th Year Milestones of Dedication Growth, Tan said.
SMYH caters for the needy and underprivileged students from the interior of Sabah (i.e., Paitan, Telupid, Beluran, Kunak, Lahad Datu, ect.), and the objective of the hostel is to provide a home-like atmosphere with a conducive learning environment and other facilities that enhance their personal growth, imparting morals such as a sense of discipline and self-reliance, Tan said.
Our boarders attend St. Mary’s Secondary School, and we accept students from Form 1 to 5, and priority is given to the needy ones. Some of our programmes are tuition classes to help boarders cope with their studies, mentoring, sports, gardening, and cooking, he added.
In partnership with the MYTC and The Brothers of St. Gabriel’s renowned experience in managing residential care systems and hands-on programmes, we are confident that we will achieve our vision and mission by providing not only academic but also enhanced personal growth and character formation to our boarders, Tan said.
According to Tan, SMYH is a non-profit organisation, and with the generosity and support from the public, we are convinced that these underprivileged students do realise and feel that they are being taken care of by people who care.
