Lai King Hang, the Founder and Chairman of Sandakan Heritage Trail, handed over the latest version of the heritage maps sponsored by Sabah Tourism to Ms. Sheila Chong, the Assistant Manager of Hotel Sandakan, who was one of the main venue sponsors of this community project when it was launched by the former President of Sandakan Municipal Council on June 21, 2003, more than 20 years ago.

Free maps will be distributed to the hotels and other related tourism spots in stages, and they can be downloaded by scanning the QR code, which is visible on all the maps and information boards along the route.

Over the years, the Sandakan Heritage Trail has grown to become one of the “must-see” attractions of Sandakan, covering 10 heritage sites that can be completed leisurely on foot in about 2 hours.

New and updated information boards since early this year, together with additional foot prints, can guide visitors walking the trail for the first time with ease.

A light walking exercise to discover the past of Sandakan, which was the pre-war capital of British North Borneo.

Beside tourism, it has also become a focus point for social programmes like runs and school projects to raise awareness of heritage conservation among the public, especially the younger generation.
