A mountain climber from the US injured while descending Mount Kinabalu

RANAU: A tourist from the United States was injured after slipping and falling at KM6.7 while descending Mount Kinabalu here on Thursday.

A spokesperson for the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department said the 53-year-old man suffered a blow to the lower back, making it difficult for him to walk down.

He said the MoSAR team, along with Park SAR and mountain guides, brought the victim down to Panalaban using a stretcher.

“The 98-kilogramme victim was safely brought down to the Timpohon gate and then handed over to the Ministry of Health for further action.

“The fire department received the distress call at around 12:00 noon, with a team of six members led by Operations Commander Feranideh Medi arriving at the scene at around 1.00 pm,” he said in a statement today.

According to the spokesperson, after ensuring the victim’s safety, the operation was concluded at 1.40 p.m. yesterday.
