KOTA MARUDU: The United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) president, Datuk Ewon Benedick, emphasised the importance of maintaining a culture of respect, tolerance, unity, and cooperation among leaders despite the diversity of religion, culture, customs, and language.
He said that showcasing respect and tolerance can be achieved through the celebration of various major festivals in the country that are attended by individuals from different races and religions.
Ewon said that UPKO’s tradition of hosting open house celebrations for Hari Raya provides an opportunity for divisions to take the lead.
He noted that past celebrations have been held in Ranau and Kota Marudu, with future events planned for Libaran.
Similarly, other festivities like the Kaamatan Festival, Christmas, Chinese New Year, and World Indigenous People’s Day are either hosted by divisions or organised in collaboration with non-governmental organisations, he said.
During his speech at the UPKO Kota Marudu Division Open House event, Ewon stressed the significance of maintaining such celebrations to strengthen unity within the government and among the people.
He also highlighted the importance of focusing on developing public facilities, promoting economic progress, and fostering unity among different communities.
Ewon, who is also the Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, expressed that events like open houses and the unity displayed by leaders and individuals from diverse backgrounds reflect the aspirations of the people.
The event was attended by Honorary President Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau, Deputy President of UPKO Datuk Donald Mojuntin, as well as members of the Supreme Council, Youth Movement, Women’s Movement, and Youth Wing of the party.
