KOTA KINABALU: Steve Johnny Mositun, the Chairman of KDCA Youth Council, expressed his gratitude towards Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor for the announcement of a RM10 million allocation to subsidize flight tickets for Sabah students studying in public higher education institutions (IPTs) in the peninsula, Sarawak, and Labuan.
He said that the one-time RM600 subsidy will greatly benefit eligible students.
It is believed that an effective mechanism can be established to ensure that entitled students receive this assistance, demonstrating that the Sabah Maju Jaya slogan is more than just words on a billboard, he said in a statement.
Steve made reference to the recent announcement by the chief minister during his visit to Penang.
He urged parents and students to acknowledge and appreciate the generous allocation made by the government through the chief minister.
Steve, who also serves as the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah Youth Information Chief, highlighted the challenges faced by not only students but also many Sabahans and Sarawakians who need to plan their journeys in advance to secure affordable flights back to their respective homelands.
Despite efforts made by Sabah MPs to address the issue during parliamentary sessions, particularly concerning the high prices of flights during festive and holiday seasons, there is still a long-standing issue that needs to be resolved, especially for counterparts in Sabah and Sarawak.
He acknowledged that there may be dissatisfaction regarding the ongoing development in Sabah, but progress is evident.
