PAPAR: United Kinabalu Progressive Organisation (UPKO, representing Pakatan Harapan (PH), is eyeing the opportunity to contest the Limbahau seat in the upcoming state election (PRN).
Its president Datuk Ewon Benedick believes the party has a fighting chance to win the seat.
“I’d like to formally declare UPKO’s interest in running for the Limbahau state seat as the representative of PH.
“As a friend in the state government and a friend of Sabah PH, I will present this position to the Chief Minister.
“In the last election, the parliamentary seat (of Papar) was contested by DAP, one of the PH coalition parties, but in the Limbahau state seat, we registered our interest in wanting to contest in this seat with the cooperation of the coalition party,” he said.
Ewon said this when met by reporters after officiating the UPKO Convention for Zone D (Papar, Kimanis and Beaufort), at Dewan Kg. Biau, here, today.
Asked about the candidate, Ewon, who is also the Minister of Entrepreneurship and Cooperative Development, said that the party has a few potential candidates to contest for the seat.
“The question of who the candidate is…is secondary. What is important is that we ask for a seat first,” he said.
In the 2020 state election, Datuk Juil Nuatim, who contested on the Parti Warisan Sabah ticket, won the seat with a majority of 2,523 votes, beating seven other candidates.
