Sabah govt to carry out a “screening exercise” on PPR tenants soon

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government will conduct a “screening exercise” to ensure that only eligible tenants of People’s Housing Projects (PPRs) under the Housing and Urban Development Board (LPPB) will be able to occupy the houses.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam said his ministry and LPPB will form a working committee to carry out the screening exercise.

He said the screening process, among other things, aimed at verifying the eligibility status of the tenants.

Dr Joachim, who is also the State Local Government and Housing Minister said the move is aimed at discouraging profiteers from renting PPR housing.

“This allows eligible applicants to rent PPR housing,” he said in a statement today.

He also informed that the LPPB circular letter dated June 19, 2023 instructing tenants who have exceeded the period of 10 years to vacate their PPR houses, only applies to tenants who are no longer eligible to continue to occupy PPR housing.

Dr. Joachim said the ministry and the LPPB regret the inconvenience caused by the inaccuracies in the contents of the circular.

He said the criteria by which a tenant may lose the right to continue renting PPR home include:

(a) Occupying the house on a rental basis;
(b) Income exceeding RM3,000.00;
(c) Tenants or spouses have their own home;
(d) Tenants who use the house as their lodging/store; Tenants making the house a ‘homestay’ and/or Tenants who have rent arrears.

Dr Joachim said the ministry and LPPB also adopted the Sabah Chief Minister’s recommendation to allocate part of the PPR houses under the LPPB to new graduates as their temporary residence or ‘transit home’ while they try to get a job and be able to rent or own their own house.
