KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is among the members of Parliament (MPs) who expressed their support for the Bill to amend the Federal Constitution to be in line with the provisions in the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
\nWhen debating the Constitution (Amendment) Bill today, Anwar said matters related to MA63 were the main agenda in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Pakatan Harapan and the government.
\nHe said the government\u2019s approval for the amendments to the Federal Constitution to be made in line with the MA63 was a\u00a0prerequisite for the MoU to proceed.
\nSo, I would like to thank the Prime Minister and the Minister in the Prime Minister\u2019s Department (Parliament and Law) for organising several engagement sessions and taking into consideration\u00a0some of our opinions,\u201d he said.
\nIn his speech, Anwar also acknowledged the contributions of previous leaders in the formation of Malaysia, including\u00a0Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, Tun Abdul Razak\u00a0Hussein, Tun V.T. Sambanthan, Tun Datu\u00a0Mustapha\u00a0Datu Harun and Tun Temenggung Jugah.
\nWe should pay tribute to the founders of Malaysia because I don\u2019t want today\u2019s generation to forget that the formation of Malaysia was made possible by the efforts undertaken by the leaders from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak,\u201d Anwar said.
\nThe Bill, tabled for the second reading by Minister in the Prime Minister\u2019s Department (Parliament and Law)\u00a0Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar earlier today, was aimed at strengthening the position of Sabah and Sarawak in the Federation of Malaysia.
\nDatuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan (Star-Keningau), Chong Chieng Jen (PH-Stampin) and Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim (GPS-Batang Lupar) also gave their support to the Bill.
\nIn her debate speech, Rohani also expressed hope that all Malaysians would be able to respect the rights of Sabah and Sarawak in the context of MA63.
\n\u201cI, together with the GPS\u00a0leadership, will continue fighting for the rights of Sarawak as enshrined in the MA63 as it is the main foundation in the formation of Malaysia,\u201d she added.
