That\u2019s\u00a0how national woman\u00a0recurve archer Syaqiera Mashayikh felt when it was confirmed that she will represent Malaysia at the July 23-Aug 8 Tokyo Olympic Games.<br \/>\nSyaqiera never expected to be given the golden opportunity when\u00a0the National Archery Association of Malaysia (NAAM) decided to select her to carry the country\u2019s challenge in the women\u2019s individual recurve event and mixed team event\u00a0with national champion\u00a0Khairul Anuar Mohamad in Japan.<br \/>\nThe 21-year-old Syaqiera said that the Tokyo Games would be her first Olympic outing and her third international assignment, having competed in the two tournaments in Paris, France &#8211; the 2020 Olympic Games Qualifying Championships and Archery World Cup Stage 3 &#8211; last month.<br \/>\n\u201cThank you NAAM for selecting me for the Tokyo Olympic Games.<br \/>\nOf course I am proud to represent the country in Tokyo.\u00a0I will try to do my best there,\u201d she said when contacted today.<br \/>\nSyaqiera had previously missed her chance to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics after losing\u00a0to Swiss archer\u00a0Valentine De Giuli 6-2\u00a0in the second round\u00a0of the women\u2019s individual recurve event at the 2020 Olympic Games Qualifying Championships,\u00a0which\u00a0happened\u00a0to be the last Olympic qualifier.<br \/>\nShe and her teammates,\u00a0Nur Ain Ayuni Fozi and Nurul Azreena Mohamad Fazil, also failed in their bid to qualify for the Tokyo Games in the team event after losing\u00a06-2 to Brazil in the first round of the team event at the Qualifiers.<br \/>\nNAAM president Datuk Abdul Hamid Hasan told Bernama on\u00a0Tuesday that Malaysia had obtained a slot to Tokyo after World Archery found that some among the 64 qualified archers did not meet the\u00a0Minimum Qualification Score (MQS) of 605 points for the women\u2019s event.<br \/>\nHe explained that Malaysia obtained the slot because they had athletes who had surpassed the MQS.<br \/>\nBased on results of qualifying championships in Paris, Syaqiera and Nurul Azreena chalked up 619 points each while\u00a0Nur Ain Ayuni collected\u00a0594 points.<br \/>\nAt the Archery World Cup Stage 3, Syaqiera obtained 619 points\u00a0while Nur Ain Ayuni and Nurul Azreena obtained 605 and 600 points respectively.<br \/>\nMeanwhile, national women\u2019s archery coach Muhammad Marbawi Sulaiman said\u00a0Syaqiera was selected by the NAAM selection committee after obtaining 619 points and surpassing the MQS, besides\u00a0having performed better than the other two archers at both the meets in Paris.<br \/>\nMarbawi, who competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics,\u00a0is thrilled to see Syaqiera competing in this year\u2019s edition in Tokyo and wants her to gain as much experience as she can.<br \/>\nOnly two other women archers have\u00a0featured in the Olympics, namely\u00a0Mon Redee Sut Txi at the 2004 Athens Olympics and Nurul Syafiqah Hashim\u00a0at the 2012 London Olympics.<br \/>\nKhairul Anuar had earlier confirmed his ticket to the Tokyo Olympics by winning a silver at the World Archery Championships in\u00a0Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands in June 2019.<br \/>\n&#8212; BERNAMA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Amiril Muttaqien Meketar KUALA LUMPUR: Surprised and excited.
