Sarawak State Election postponed – EC<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR: The Sarawak State Election, which is scheduled to be held this year, has been postponed.
\nElection Commission (EC) secretary\u00a0Datuk Ikmalrudin\u00a0Ishak\u00a0said this was in view of\u00a0the Proclamation of Emergency issued by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Jan 11 and the provisions\u00a0of\u00a0Section 13 of the Emergency (Essential Powers)\u00a0Ordinance 2021.
\n\u201cThe Sarawak State Election must be held on a date deemed fit by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong after consulting\u00a0the Sarawak\u00a0Yang Dipertua Negeri,\u201d he said in a statement today.
\nHe added that the EC had received an official notification\u00a0from the Sarawak State\u00a0Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar\u00a0today on the expiration of the term of the\u00a018th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly.
\nHowever, under Section 15 of the Emergency (Essential Powers)\u00a0Ordinance 2021, the power to summon, prorogue and dissolve the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly\u00a0has no effect, said Ikmalrudin.
\nEarlier, Mohamad Asfia\u00a0said the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, whose term is scheduled to end today, will continue to function until Aug 1,\u00a02021,\u00a0by virtue of the declaration of the Emergency (Essential Powers) Ordinance 2021.
