SANDAKAN: Bukit Leila Forest Reserve came alive with activity as families gathered to enjoy outdoor exercise, reconnect with nature, and spend quality time together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This surge of visitors followed the Sabah Forestry Department\u2019s decision to waive the entrance fee, a move prompted by Karamunting assemblyman Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin after he brought local residents\u2019 concerns to the department\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In celebration of the decision, Hiew led a group of hiking and trekking enthusiasts on a hike through the popular Bukit Leila trail on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was also the first to register at the newly established registration counter set up by the Forestry Department. The counter serves to track hikers\u2019 entry and exit times to ensure their safety within the forest reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m delighted that this trail is now free for the public to enjoy again. It has long been known as one of the best hiking spots in Sandakan. However, I urge everyone to help protect this forest by respecting the rules and keeping the area clean,\u201d said Hiew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last Saturday, Hiew reached out to Sabah\u2019s chief conservator of forests, Datuk Frederick Kugan, conveying the hopes of local residents and hikers for the removal of the entrance fee. Their discussions led to the cancellation of the fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Participants expressed their gratitude for Hiew\u2019s efforts in championing the community\u2019s concerns and ensuring the public could continue to enjoy the reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hikers are reminded to maintain discipline by refraining from littering, especially with plastic bottles and other waste. Additionally, activities such as decorating, pitching tents, cutting trees, barbecuing, or camping are strictly prohibited to preserve the integrity of the forest environment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
