KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO is ready to face PAS in the 15th\u00a0General Election (GE15) if the party continues to be part of Perikatan Nasional\u00a0(PN), party\u00a0advisory\u00a0board chairman\u00a0Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said today.
\n\u201c\u2026\u00a0we (UMNO) have got nothing to do with PN, we will go against PN and if PAS is still in there (PN), we will fight PAS (as well). What choice is there?\u201d\u00a0
\n\u201cIf Pas (wants) to be with us through Muafakat Nasional (MN), then it should leave PN,\u201d he told reporters when commenting on UMNO president\u00a0Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi\u2019s policy speech at the\u00a0UMNO General Assembly 2020 held at the World Trade Centre here today.\u00a0
\nAhmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, said the UMNO-led coalition has decided to contest the GE15\u00a0on its own.
\nHe said UMNO, the biggest party of the Malays, has also decided to maintain the decision of its Supreme Council to not have any cooperation with Parti Keadilan Rakyat president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, DAP, and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).
\nTengku Razaleigh\u00a0also proposed that all\u00a0UMNO leaders appointed by the PN-government as ministers, deputy ministers and government-linked companies chairmen resign from their posts.\u00a0
\nMeanwhile, UMNO leaders also agreed with the proposal for the party to cease cooperation with Bersatu, and for BN to contest GE15 on its own.\u00a0
\nThey said it was a clear message to the grassroots on the party\u2019s future direction, which is to ensure\u00a0stability and for Malay-Muslim unity to prevail.\u00a0
\nBN treasurer-general\u00a0Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said\u00a0he welcomed the stand of the Supreme Council members on the matter.
\n\u201cWhat is important now is to stay away from rhetorics\u2026\u00a0if we really value stability, direction and the party\u2019s future, I feel we still have time to think about it,\u201d he said.\u00a0
\nUMNO Youth chief\u00a0Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the president’s policy speech was the party’s agenda and stance on political cooperation.
\n\u201cI think once and for all it is important as the captain of UMNO to provide an explanation on the party’s stance on political cooperation and also the agenda for the future,” he said.
\nOn ties within MN, Asyraf\u00a0said the ties between two of the largest Malay parties, namely UMNO and PAS is\u00a0rooted in the unity and cooperation of the grassroots.
\nUMNO vice-president\u00a0Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, meanwhile, said the\u00a0\u2018No PPBM\u00a0(Bersatu) No Anwar No DAP\u2019\u00a0stand\u00a0was a concerted decision\u00a0taken by the party.\u00a0
\nFormer UMNO secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa, on the other hand, described BN’s stand to move solo in GE15 as the party’s right, adding that\u00a0the decision also indirectly provides\u00a0an opportunity for delegates and party members to make their\u00a0assessment.
\n\u201cI feel it is the president’s right to choose the narrative, at least the president has explained\u00a0because prior to this there were some (in BN) who were proposing to work with other parties and he (the president) has now made a stand\u2026\u00a0it is up\u00a0to the members and delegates to make the best assessment,\u201d he said.\u00a0
