{"id":26022,"date":"2024-02-02T17:06:01","date_gmt":"2024-02-02T09:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jesseltontimes.com\/wpmarch2025\/?p=26022"},"modified":"2024-02-02T17:07:07","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T09:07:07","slug":"najibs-prison-sentence-shortened-expected-to-be-released-in-august-2028","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jesseltontimes.com\/wpmarch2025\/2024\/02\/02\/najibs-prison-sentence-shortened-expected-to-be-released-in-august-2028\/","title":{"rendered":"Najib&#8217;s prison sentence shortened, expected to be released in August 2028"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KOTA KINABALU: The secretary of the Pardons Board has announced a reduction in the prison sentence and fine of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, he will now be released on August 23, 2028, which is earlier than the previous release date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pardons Board, during its meeting on January 29, also decided to decrease the imposed fine from RM210,000,000 to RM50,000,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional year of imprisonment, leading to a new release date of August 23, 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The secretary of the Pardons Board of the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya, under the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister&#8217;s Department, issued a statement regarding this matter today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The board meeting, chaired by the then Yang diPertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri&#8217;ayatuddin Mustafa Billah Shah, took place last Monday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Al-Sultan Abdullah&#8217;s reign as Malaysia&#8217;s king ended the following day as he completed his five-year tenure according to the rotation system among the rulers. His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim of Johor has now ascended the throne for the next five-year period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement mentioned that the board considered five pardon applications, including the one submitted by Najib.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After careful deliberation and advice, the board decided to grant a 50% reduction in both the sentence and the fine imposed on Dato\u2019 Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, he has been approved for early release on August 23, 2028, with the fine reduced from RM210,000,000.00 to RM50,000,000.00.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It emphasized that failure to pay the fine would result in a one-year extension of Najib&#8217;s prison term, leading to a new release date of August 23, 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This announcement puts an end to the speculation surrounding the outcome of the board meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A news portal had previously retracted its article claiming that Najib had been pardoned by the board.
