KOTA KINABALU: Kuala Langat Member of Parliament (MP) Datuk Xavier Jayakumar today announced his resignation as party vice-president and member, expressing\u00a0 support for the Perikatan Nasional government as an independent.<\/div>\n
\n

\u201cThroughout my career as a politician, I have been with PKR since 1998,\u201d he said in a statement released through social media.<\/p>\n

However, he said following the events that had unfolded in this past year, he had grown extremely frustrated.<\/div>\n
The former water, land and natural resources minister also questioned whether calls for an early general election are necessary or viable at this juncture.<\/div>\n
\u201cThe priority should be to support the government in containing the Covid-19 pandemic, to create jobs, and to secure funds to rebuild the economy.<\/div>\n
\u201cIt will take at least 18 months just to complete the vaccination programme, and more than two years for the economy to fully recover.\u201d<\/div>\n
Endorsing the PN administration, he said the government\u2019s efforts need bipartisan support to ensure they are realised.<\/div>\n
\u201cThe people want stability, and to restart our ailing economic sectors.<\/div>\n
\u201cTowards this, we need to work together, not against one another.\u201d<\/div>\n
Announcing his resignation with immediate effect, Xavier said he will continue to serve his constituency and support the government as an independent MP.<\/div>\n
\u201cI am confident that I will fulfill my election promises to the people of Kuala Langat.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
