KUALA LUMPUR:\u00a0Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin,\u00a0who is facing\u00a0four counts of corruption\u00a0to solicit bribes amounting\u00a0to RM232.5 million and two counts of money laundering involving\u00a0RM195 million,\u00a0has been granted release on bail of RM2 million with two sureties by the Sessions Court here.
\nThe former prime minister was also ordered by Judge\u00a0Azura Alwi to surrender his passport\u00a0pending disposal of his case.
\nJudge Azura also\u00a0fixed\u00a0May 26 for mention of the case.
\nEarlier, Muhyiddin\u00a0pleaded not guilty and claimed trial to all six counts.
\nSolicitor-General Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh\u00a0proposed bail of RM2 million with two sureties and\u00a0an additional condition that the accused surrender his passport to the court.
\nLawyer Datuk K.Kumaraendran, representing Muhyiddin, agreed to the bail amount and the additional condition.
\nThe prosecution was also conducted\u00a0by deputy public prosecutors Datuk Faridz Gohim Abdullah, Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin, Ahmad Akram Gharib, Noralis Mat, Nor Asma Ahmad, Rasyidah Murni Azmi, Muhammad Asraf Mohamed Tahir, Kalai Vani Annadorai and Maziah Mohaide.
\nMuhyiddin\u00a0was also represented by lawyers Datuk Rosli Dahlan, Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, Chetan Jethwani, Dev Kumaraendran, Mohamad Isa Mohamad Basir, Teh See Khoon and Varsha Chelvi.
\nOn the first and second charges, Muhyiddin, was\u00a0charged as the country\u2019s Prime Minister and Bersatu president, to have abused his office or position to obtain\u00a0gratification of RM200 million from Bukhary Equity Sdn Bhd and RM1 million from Nepturis Sdn Bhd, for Bersatu.
\n\u00a0As for the third and fourth charges, he was\u00a0alleged to have used his position as the Prime Minister and Bersatu\u00a0president to obtain gratification of RM19.5 million from Mamfor Sdn Bhd and RM12 million from Azman Yusoff for Bersatu.
\nThe Pagoh MP was alleged to have committed all the offences at the Prime Minister’s Office, Main Block of the Perdana Putra Building, Federal Government Administrative\u00a0Centre in Putrajaya, between\u00a0March 1, 2020, and \u00a0Aug 20, 2021.
\nThe charges were framed under\u00a0Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 which provides imprisonment for up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount or value of the bribe,\u00a0or RM10,000, whichever is higher, if found guilty.
\nHe was\u00a0also charged, in his capacity as Bersatu president,\u00a0with two counts of received money from unlawful activities amounting to RM195 million from Bukhary Equity Sdn Bhd which was deposited into the party’s CIMB Bank account.
\nThe offence was allegedly committed at CIMB Bank Menara KL Branch, Jalan Stesen Sentral, here, between Feb 25,\u00a0 2021,\u00a0 and July 16, 2021,\u00a0 and Feb 8 and July 8, 2022.
\nThe charges were framed under\u00a0Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001,\u00a0read together with section 87(1) of the same law, which provides imprisonment\u00a0for up to 15 years and can also be fined not less than five times the amount or value of the proceeds from\u00a0the unlawful activity or RM5 million, whichever is higher, if convicted.
